The September school checklist for UK parents (2026)

Published 2026-08-08 · by the Fred team

The first week of September has a way of ambushing families: the uniform that no longer fits, the form that was due yesterday, the club that filled up in July. This checklist front-loads the faff into August, when everything is still bookable and label-able.

TL;DR — do these eight things and September mostly runs itself:

  1. Put term dates and inset days in the family calendar now
  2. Try on uniform and PE kit this week; order gaps immediately
  3. Name-label everything that leaves the house
  4. Top up ParentPay / school money before week one
  5. Book wraparound care and holiday-club places for autumn
  6. Sign up for clubs the day the letter arrives — they fill in hours
  7. Set up a triage system for school emails before the flood starts
  8. Agree the weekly kit rota (who needs what, which days) and write it down

Two weeks before term

Dates first — all of them

Most English schools return between Tuesday 1 and Friday 4 September 2026, but the exact day is set by your school or trust — check the term-dates page on the school website, not the council's generic calendar. While you're there, capture the dates parents usually miss: inset days (five per year in England and Wales, and rarely the same days as the school down the road), autumn half term, and the last day of term, which is often a half-day. Every one of those is a childcare problem if it first surfaces the week it happens. (More on inset days in our inset days guide.)

Uniform, PE kit, shoes

Try everything on now — children grow sideways over summer. Check the school's actual uniform policy before buying (logo items vs. supermarket generics), and look for the PTA's secondhand uniform sale, which is usually September's best-kept secret. Label everything: jumpers, water bottles, lunch boxes, both shoes. Stick-on labels survive about a term; sewn or iron-on last the year.

Money and accounts

Log into ParentPay (or whatever your school uses — SCOPAY, Arbor payments, sQuid) before term starts: reset the forgotten password now, not in the playground. Top up dinner money and check whether last year's balance carried over. If your child is starting Reception through Year 2 in England, school lunches are free — but you usually still need to place the order.

One week before

  • Childcare bookings. Breakfast and after-school club places go fast; confirm your slots and the payment method. Book holiday-club days for October half term now if your employer's leave calendar is competitive.
  • The forms. Photo consent, emergency contacts, medical updates, local-walks permission — schools front-load these into week one. Doing them the evening they arrive beats chasing them in October.
  • Comms apps. Reinstall and re-login: ParentMail, Class Dojo, Arbor, Tapestry — whichever combination your school runs. Turn ON email copies where the app allows it, so everything lands in one searchable place.
  • The kit rota. Write down which days are PE, swimming, forest school, library-book day — per child. Stick it on the fridge or, better, somewhere that reminds you the night before.

The first week

Expect the paper flood: newsletters, club letters, trip letters, curriculum evenings. The single highest-leverage habit is a same-day triage rule — every letter or email gets one of three fates the day it arrives: a date goes in the calendar, an action gets done or scheduled, or it's genuinely FYI and gets filed. Our school email triage guide covers the 15-minute version of this system.

And watch the class WhatsApp group with kind scepticism: it's brilliant for "does anyone have the spelling list?" and terrible as a primary source of dates.

The shortcut

Everything above is a system a human has to run — which is rather the problem with school admin. Fred runs it for you: forward the school's emails to your family's private Fred address, snap the paper letters, and Fred pulls out the dates, payments and actions, puts them on the calendar, and reminds the right parent the night before. On WhatsApp, where you already are.
